Google has released a new version of its Google Maps Mobile for the BlackBerry Pearl handset that allows users to search using their voice. This experimental feature allows users to simply hold a button and say what they'd like to find on the map.

CDMA carrier Telus in Canada is to be the first carrier in North America to land a version of the HTC Touch Diamond smartphone. Telus will start selling its Touch Diamond, which has received some cosmetic changes, later this summer. Updated.

Nokia has just launched its Files on Ovi service in an open beta test. Files on Ovi provides users with mobile access to files on a home or office computer. Files can also be shared (with an expiration date) and can be stored on the service's servers for anytime access.

Openmoko has announced that it will begin offering the Neo FreeRunner Linux cell phone on Friday, July 4th, at its online shop. The Neo FreeRunner features a 2.8" VGA-resolution touchscreen and includes WiFi and AGPS support, as well.

The Education Ministry of Cyprus is proposing new laws that would put a hard ban on cell phones in its schools. Students caught with an active cell phone will be suspended, those shooting video or taking photos with one could be expelled.

Tuesday, in Brazil, Motorola announced a new slider handset, the ZN200, planned to be available in September. The ZN200 features a 2 megapixel camera with image-editing tools on board. Bluetooth support with A2DP for stereo headsets is also built-in, allowing for easy wireless music enjoyment.

AT&T has provided some further details on its plans for the iPhone 3G, including consumers being able to buy an iPhone 3G without a contract at all for a higher price. The iPhone 3G is going to go on sale at AT&T stores first thing in the morning on July 11th.

T-Mobile USA will be raising its per message SMS rates on August 29th. The new rate will only affect users who are not currently on a monthly messaging plan. T-Mobile is the last of the major carriers to raise its rates to 20 cents per message.

The FCC has approved a CDMA version of the HTC Touch Pro smartphone, clearing it for use on CDMA networks such as Sprint and Verizon. The Touch Pro is powered by Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and includes HTC's TouchFLO 3D user interface, for finger-friendly navigation.

The GSM Association has announced that it will allow a group of 44 mobile operators to set the minimum requirements for NFC handsets. NFC, or Near Field Communications, is a short range wireless technology that allows a secure transaction of data over short range.
